Copenhagen

I've arrived, I'm exhausted, and I'm hungry, so I'll keep this short.

I'm in Copenhagen.  After landing, I waited a bit for my bag to arrive.  When it did, it seemed to be in rather good condition, so I headed out to the trains and purchased a one-way ticket to Copenhagen Central.  Cost:  36,00 DKK.

After taking 45 minutes making sure that I was indeed getting on the correct train, I finally teamed up with a middle-aged man from California and a young canal-builder on his way back from Panama to his home in Lithuania.  Between the three of us, we managed to get on the correct train and headed for the city.

The city is a bicyclist's heaven.  The major streets are sometimes three lanes wide, with about a 3/4 width lane on either side for bicycles, and copious sidewalks.  I didn't know exactly where I was supposed to go from the station, so I got my bearings (compass!) and headed southeast toward the major canal/river thingamajig that runs through the city.

By the way, as I was on Wikipedia looking for the name of said thingamajig, I noticed that the first image in the geography section for the city on Wikipedia is exactly the view from my hostel room on the 14th floor.  I can literally glance to my right and see the same thing out the window.  It's even about the same time of day, except it's a little more overcast currently.  But really, this is all just proving my point about why I didn't need to take a camera - the picture already exists, and it's nicer than what I would have taken.

The hostel itself is alright - utilitarian as it is.  I'm mildly perturbed that the 10-person room has 6 lockers, all 6 of which were already in use.  I suppose we'll see what happens.  Just don't leave things lying around...and hopefully they'll be fine.

But - it's 19:56 over here, and I'm in dire need of a shower and some food.  I've updated the financial breakdown to include the train ticket, but aside from dinner I don't plan on spending any more money tonight.

Homework:  Suggestions on where to go/what to do tomorrow?

Update: 2200 CEST
I ended up at a pizza place.  Now, before you decide to kill me, hear me out.  It's been raining over here, and I have discovered that my supposedly "water-proof" jacket does absolutely nothing to keep the water out.  In fact, it may be worse than a hoody, because at least a hoody has some weight to soak up some of the water before it penetrates.

Anyway - it was still an adventure because I had to deduce what toppings were what. Sauce (tomat) and cheese (ost) were pretty easy, but it didn't make much difference because they were on nearly every pizza.  Pepperoni (pepperoni) was also easy, but I don't particularly like pepperoni, so that only helped narrow it down.  In the end, I ended up getting a "Pizza Paella".  Besides sauce and cheese, it had ham (skinke), mushroom(champignon), some green sauce and probably a few other things I don't remember.  It was pretty tasty, but I was annoyed at not being able to remember a little more Danish for placing the order.

As wandering through the Copenhagen nightlife isn't a very appealing plan right now, I think I'm going to head down to the bar and have a drink, and read for a while.

  3. If you happen to know a little German, it should help. Ham is Schinken... and Champignon is French for mushroom I think, because Pilz is German and I thought Svamp was Danish (at least according to a friend in high school). Oh well. You'll have fun!

  5. My knowledge of German is about as solid as my knowledge of Danish - really, any expended effort should probably be toward Danish at this point.

Last night I had one drink and read some Kant until sleepiness set in (probably the Kant more than the alcohol), then I went to bed.
