After yesterday's run and breakfast, I decided to grab a bike and check out the shoreline. Even though it was too cold for swimming, I figured I'd head up to Den Permanente anyway and see what it was like.
One of the interesting things about Århus is its integration with the natural environment. Despite being the second-largest city in Denmark, large wooded areas are easily accessible from anywhere in the city. The beach was a few kilometers north of my hostel, and was sandwiched between the sea and the
Riis Skov (Forest of Riis).
It was largely empty, but looked like it would be a fun place to hang out when (if?) it got warmer. I was a little hungry, so I stopped by a kiosk and bought a French-style hotdog - a slimmer sausage about eight inches long in a closed cylinder about 6 inches long, with condiments placed inside the cylinder with the sausage. It was tasty enough, thought I noticed that the ketchup used was far, far sweeter than what would be served in the US. Maybe it's a European thing, or perhaps it's unique to that style of hot dog? Let me know if you know the answer!

After lunch, I biked about 5 km south to the "Sculpture by the Sea" art event Timothy suggested in the comments from "Heading to Århus". It was a very interesting art collection, and its integration within the 3 km of beach and forest in which it was placed was impeccable! Definitely a worthwhile use of time, Timothy! It did drizzle partway through viewing the exhibit, but that's par for the course around here. Portions of the exhibit are
viewable here.

It was late when I headed back, but I decided to stop by the grocery and purchase supplies to make dinner. All told, I only spent about 60 kr, and purchased a kg of spaghetti, a jar of sauce, garlic bread, a nuttella/cookie stick snack pack, and a can of hard cider. I wiled the evening away making (and eating) dinner and doing laundry. A great day!
I had similar breadsticks and nutella one day somewhere in Scandinavia! ..although they didn't come in a snack pack sadly..
ReplyDeleteI love any sort of dipping cookie stick/ and dipping sauce :3 pocky (predipped) yan-yan, etc. ^^
